Four county wrestlers advance to state quarterfinals

EVANSVILLE — Nine Hancock County wrestlers made the trip to Evansville with the hopes of heading home as an IHSAA Boys Wrestling state champion.
​
Step one to leaving with hardware was winning Friday’s opening round match. Four grapplers did just that.
​
New Palestine’s Colin Whetsel and Gunner Butt, Eastern Hancock’s Bradyn Volz and Greenfield-Central’s Jett McGuire all won their first bout of the weekend at the Ford Center and will continue their season today.

It’s a new venue, but the goals will always be the same.
The IHSAA announced last March the 86th Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Finals will be contested at the Ford Center in Evansville, going away from a traditional central Indiana location.
​
It is the first time the city of Evansville has hosted an IHSAA State Finals event in any sport.
​
The tournament was moved due to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis being host for the NBA All-Star Game. Indianapolis had been the host of the state wrestling tournament every year since 1985, which was also the last time the city hosted the NBA All-Star Game. The tournament was in New Castle in 1985.
Hancock County grabs six regional titles at Perry, advances 17 to semi-state

INDIANAPOLIS — Saturday’s IHSAA Perry Meridian Boys Wrestling Regional featured some new faces.
​
With sectional realignment bringing in schools such as Lawrence North, Lawrence Central, North Central and Mt. Vernon, the field was one of the deepest wrestling regionals across the state.
​
For the three Hancock County schools, that didn’t matter. Seventeen total wrestlers from the county punched their ticket to the New Castle Semi-State and six of the 14 weight classes were won by county athletes.
